Defiance College sees coronavirus outbreak at school

Defiance County is dealing with abnormally high cases of COVID-19 due to new cases reported at Defiance College.

Now.

Good evening i'm hunter petroviak.thanks for joining us.defiance county is dealing with abnormally high cases of covid 19.sunday..

The county's health department reported 28 new cases... in large part due to an outbreak at defiance college.fox 55's chris mullooly spoke with the county's health commissioner and joins us live.chris..

How are the department and the school working on this??hunter -- commissioner gurkin says they're always in constant communication...even before this looking at worst case scenarios and making plans.she says the school notified her quickly when they heard of the outbreak...and are working to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Actually have it come to fruition and be in the middle of it is kinda crazy?nats?the empty campus of defiance college with fewer students than in weeks pass....38 students testing positive recently for covid 19... with school and health leaders working to curb the outbreak spikes and valleys like most people most we've keeped it low but the college having the 36 students test positive was something unexpecteddefiance health commissioner jamie gerken says the school informed her right away about the outbreak.working on quarantining those who tested positive...and contact tracing to make sure they know who else is possibly affected.

Thats key in minimizing or slowing spread to college and community as wellin a statement released monday... doctor richanne mankey... president of defiance college says part of the problem was some students not adhering to health guidelines.in an email to us... she wrote the school requires students and staff to wear masks and perform daily health checks... as well as sanitize and stay socially distant from others when possible.gerken says to stop the spread from continuing... takes everyone doing their part.you may not agree with everything but do it not for yourself but your kids who want to have a sports season and grandparents who are at high risk president mankey also tweeted on friday last week face to face will continue until thanksgiving break....then the last week and finals will be completed remotely.no word on if that would change... barring any setbacks from the outbreak.reporting live ... chris mullooly... fox 55 news.
