Absentee voter assistance sites open in Madison County

New information.... the first "absentee voter assistance site" just closed for the day in the last half hour.

The site will help those who'd like to vote absentee during the november election .

Waay 31's ashley carter was at alabama a and m today when the site opened and explains how these sites are designed to help voters.

Each drive thru assistance site will provide a number of services to voters including helping with the application, providing notary services and collecting ballots that need to be returned.

Madison county circuit clerk debra kizer told me more than 16- thousand people have already requested to vote absentee which is a record number for the county.

She expects even more requests in the coming weeks.

She hopes these sites help make voting absentee easier.

<sot debra kizer, madison co circuit clerk "we just wanted to make a safer option for people to come cast their votes and also to make it accessible.

Getting out at the courthouse and finding parking is not always the easiest thing to do so we decided we'd move around the county and offer these various sites."

Ll already shot "they aren't able to give out any ballots at these assistance sites, but they will be able to turn yours in.

And, any ballot you give to them will be turned into the courthouse once the site closes in the afternoon."> if you couldn't make it out today - there are more sites planned for this month.

The next one will be tomorrow at the sandra moon community complex.

Each site will operate from 9 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon.

Alabama voters are having to deal with new voting regulations because of the pandemic!

There is no witness requirement for voters with an underlying medical conditon.

Loosened photo i-d rules -- and curb-side voting will be allowed across the state.

Huntsville, scottsboro, decatur and florence city clerks all said the new guidelines will not impact the runoff election next tuesday.

The cities will not be offering any curbside voting.

You still have around half an hour to apply for absentee ballot for that election.
