We're taking a quick break from our network coverage to bring you an alabama election update.

Poll are closed in alabama - and now all eyes are on the u-s senate race.

Incumbent democratic senator doug jones - facing off against republican candidate tommy tuberville for the job.

.

Alabama was one of the first states called for president donald trump.

It happened as soon as the polls closed.

The president also secured tennessee.

Thanks for joining us - i'm najahe sherman.

And i'm dan shaffer.

We have a team of reporters across the state tonight - working to keep you updated on the races here.

We start with waay 31's sydney martin.

She's in montgomery - for republican senate candidate tommy tuberville's watch party.

It started just 20 minutes ago!

Dan, najahe- the ballroom here is starting to fill up as supporters arrived early to great coach tuberville.

We got to talk to him before he made his way around the room.

He answered a variety of questions including his plans if he wins tonight and his thoughts on the coronavirus... but right now tuberville, tuberville is focusing on watching the results roll in- and hoping he did enough to get a win tonight.

I'd love to feel confident but you don't know.

Because you can't control it.

I've tried to control it for the last 3 months in this campaign alone and we didn't have that much money."

"my whole game plan fro the entire almost two years i've been running is to go directly to the people and to tell them number one while i'm doing this and number 2 why i'm qualified."

Tuberville did say he's concernd because his oponent doug jones raised about 8 times more money than he did- but he's hoping voters chose to vote for him at the polls.

I'll have more with what he said later tonight.

Live in montgomery sm waay 31 news.

Thanks sydney - we're moving north from montgomery now - to birmingham.

That's where we find waay 31's breken terry at senator doug jones' watch party.

That event starts in just a few minutes - and his campaign tells us they're still optimistic.

Back in north alabama - very few, if any polling locations still have a line.

It's quiet now at one of huntsville's busiest polling sites.

Multiple people at west huntsville church of christ told us they were in line for roughly 4 hours today.

Those long lines happened even though the madison county probate judge says there was a 300-percent increase in absentee ballots!

And in the shoals - it's also quiet in colbert county after record-breaking turnout.

The probate judge says at its peak - the wait time at some polling locations was an hour long.

His office started counting absentee ballots this morning.

There were more than 3- thousand!

Tonight - there are also 6 state amendments on the ballot.

We'll bring you those updates as they happen - but at this point, we're still waiting for our first round of statewide results.

There are also state board of education positions open - but none of those are in north alabama.

We have a team monitoring state-wide and local races.

Abc news has you covered on the presidential race.

For the latest results from alabama - head to our website and social media.

We'll be back on air for another update in half an hour.
