'You don't know what you're going to walk into every day,' local health care workers deal with an increase of COVID-19 hospitalizations

Get tested.

We're seeing spikes of positive covid-19 cases around the valley.

This has left many healthcare facilities fighting to keep up.

Hospitals around the valley are counting on nurses to keep covid patients alive.

News 10 bureau chief gary brian had the chance to speak with one of those heroes today.

He tells us what fighting covid-19 has been like for those at good samaritan hospital.

Gar} "wednesday knox county reported its 1000th case of covid-19.

As positive cases continue to spike good samaritan hospital is working to keep up."

Chelsea unkefer is the shift coordinator for the critical care floor at good samaritan.

It's her job to keep her team rolling.

"we're here to do what we need to do.

We're here to take care of our patients."

That stiff upper lip dosen't mean it's been easy.

"i drive 45 minutes home and that's a good 45 minutes for me.

Because i can decompress and i pray a lot."

The pandemic began slowly in knox county.

But unkefer says things changed around june.

In the time since the staff have been learning how to best take care of those suffering from covid-19.

"we've seen a lot more in the hospital and it's very scary.

You don't know what you're going to walk into every day."

Unkefer and her crew have begun to get a handle on how to handle covid-19.

They also get support from hospital staff...and from each other.

"we work directly with respiratory, we work with our patient care techs, our lab.

Like i feel like all departments have really became a lot closer and we all feel, because we all have the same experiences and challenges that we all have to face everyday."

Gar} "the hospital has a comfort cart to give supplies to those who are fighting covid-19.

If you'd like to donate to that cart head over to our website at wthitv.com and click on this story.

Working from home in vincennes, gary brian news 10."
