6-year-old raises money to provide socks for Chico's homeless

Maverick McKeen, a kindergartener from Paradise, decided to raise money to buy 100 pairs of socks for the homeless.

From paradise taking steps to make sure people without a home - can keep warm.

Action news now reporter kristian lopez shows us the heart warming story...... maverick mckeen/kindergartener: we're going to go buy 100 pairs of socks.

Kristian lopez: how are you feeling?

Maverick: good.

Kristian lopez: how excited are you?

Maverick: excited, very excited.

Kristian lopez: maverick mckeen was riding bikes with his mom right here at bidwell park when he noticed a lot of homeless people in the area, he decided he wanted to do something to help.

Heidi mckeen/maverick's mom: he noticed that there was a significant amount of people that call the park home, he asked where do they keep their stuff, where do they get food and he noticed a lot of people were barefoot.

Maverick: i chose socks for the homeless people in homeless at bidwell park since they didnt have socks.

Heidi mckeen: according to maverick socks are the most important thing in the world, to him, he thought this was the most important thing and people don't have it, his socks bring him joy and he wanted to share it with other people.

We set up a go fund me 7 days ago and two days ago he reached his goal of 500.

Maverick mckeen: i want to go to 1000 so i can do it on thanksgiving and christmas.

Heidi mckeen: 106 pairs of socks, is that your 100 pairs?

Maverick mckeen: its more than 100, its 106 heidi mckeen: i am just really proud of him and i'm excited that a such a young age he sees the importance in giving back to the community and i'm glad he chose something that's important to him that he's sharing with other people.

Kristian lopez: and right now maverick and his mom are bagging up all of the socks so they can distribute them to those in need next week.
