And with the chillier temperatures comes --- the gift of a christmas tree that's right -- santa came early this year -- with a nearly thirty foot tall christmas tree now in downtown evansville.

44news reporter marisa is in evansville with that story "i love seeing the holiday tree being brought here to the civic center to bring everybody together for the holidays."

Every year -- one dozen volunteers cut down a donated tree in the early morning before moving it over to its signature spot at the civic center.

This year -- it was skanska providing the crane -- while vectren and evansville police officers also helped transport it.

But with businesses still financially struggling - the holiday tradition looked gloom for a bit -- leaving city officials worried -- would there be no christmas tree this year??nobody stepped up like they have in the past."

But in a christmas miracle -- the national electrical contractors association agreed to let crews remove the twenty six foot tall blue spruce from the property to be used by the city at the last minute.

"when we spotted the tree - we called them and could not have been more receptive and wanted to do this for the city."

And by this time next thursday, this tree will look even more festive -- for the annual tree lighting ceremony.

With even the signature school choir performing.

And the mayor says the community will have a chance to safely enjoy the popular ceremony.

"one -- we can be outside -- there's plenty of room to socially distance.

So many things have been canceled -- but we need to celebrate when we can celebrate and this is one way too celebrate."

"i know everyone's been distracted with covid- this year -- and this is just a great minder that we're entering that part of the year where it's important to be thankful for what we have."

The event will also be live streamed for anyone who does not feel comfortable attending "even if we can't be here in person.

It's still a great sign for our community that we're still here, we're still present, and we're still going to celebrate the holiday season."

The tree is slated to stay outside of the civic center until the new year.
