The ban on evicting renters ends on New Year's Eve.

We talk to a North Georgia couple who is facing losing their home.

Recess.

A moratorium by the cdc, preventing landlords from taking steps to begin evicting tenants ends december 31st.

This may put some families in jeopardy this holiday season.

News 12's winston reed tells the story of a married couple who say they are facing eviction.

Give us the details winston.

The chaffin's have been upfront about their inability to pay their rent over past seven months.

But with two weeks before the moratorium ends, heather and jeremy fear that they may be on the streets come christmas time.

"we're going to be homeless.

We have nowhere to go.we have no family, no friends."

Like many families across the nation, heather and jeremy chaffin have suffered financial hardships during the covid pandemic.

The couple says they their landlord has already eviction actions despite a moratorium in place by the cdc.

Now, the couple is scheduled to arrive in court on the 21st.

"very other county is following the law except for walker county and i've talked to the judge -i've talkedto her several times.

It doesn't matter what we do."

"what landlords need to be aware of is that they can be charged."

Defense attorney mcckracken poston says there could be individual counties ignoring the moratorium at their own risk.

Mccracken also understands landlords are suffering financial deficits as well.

"something's gotta give.

Perhaps another stimulus but i think thelandlords should also be considered as part of their business."

According to cbs news, congress is negotiating a current stimulus that includes, money for rental assitance, food assistance, money for schools and vaccine, and 300 billion for small businesses.

But with kids and dogs to take care of, time doesn't seem to be on the chaffin's side.

"the first stimulus bill, it took us six months before we even got ours."

The chaffin's landlords tells us that they began the eviction process because the walker county gave them permission.

But poston the defense attorney says that doesn't prevent the landlord from facing federal penalties.

The property owners did say the chaffin's will not have to move out until after january first.
