- the mississippi gulf coast- community has lost a legend.- former m-g-c-c-c head football- coach george sekul died at age- 83 monday at his home in- d'iberville surrounded by - family.

- sekul spent four years as an- assistant coach at mississippi- gulf coast and took over as hea- coach of the football - team in 1966.

- news 25's grace boyles speaks - with some of those who have - been impacted by sekul both on- and off the field - - coach, player, father, husband,- grandfather, shrimper.

All of - these describe the legendary- george sekul.

- not only did sekul lead the - bulldogs to national titles in- 1971 and 1984, eight state- championships, and has been - inducted into 10 sports hall of- fames, he himself was a - succesful - football player, attending what- was then perkinston - junior college and was named as- a first-team all-state selectio- at quarterback before eventuall- becoming the- starting quarterback at what is- now southern miss.- despite dedicating much of his- life to the game of - football, sekul was blessed wit- three daughters and no sons-- - something his youngest daughter- michelle, says- was a good thing.

- michelle sekul, mgccc dean of - student services/sekul's- youngest: "it's probably a- blessing because to rise to tha- standard-- my dad - was such a phenomenal athlete - and, of course, he was an - outstanding coach - and leader.

And those are big - shoes to fill."

/ "so, i guess- instead of having football- - - - players, he had cheerleaders."- michelle, who is currently the- dean of student services at - mississippi gulf coast communit- college, says it's in honor for- people to associate her with- such a great man.

- michelle sekul, mgccc dean of - student services/sekul's- youngest: "'oh are you george - sekul's daughter?'

Yes, i'm - george sekul's- daughter.

Oh and the the storie- that would follow.."- one of those stories comes from- sekul's former players- and current biloxi city - councilman kenny glavan as- he remembers when the lauded- coach recruited him.- kenny glavan, biloxi- councilman/former defensive - lineman: "coach shows up at - the shop and he looked over at- me with that look and he looked- at my dad and - said 'we need him.'

And both my- dad and him went into the - office.

About five- minutes my dad came out and sai- 'you're going to play for - - - - coach.'"/ "you know, he gave a- lot of coast boys the - opportunity to continue a game- that we love.

And i - think if he saw the love the- game in a person, that's the- kind of player he wanted.

- and that's why i think his team- won a lot of football games.- after retiring from coaching in- 1991 with more than 200 wins in- 26 years at the helm of the m-g- c-c-c football program, sekul - became a pillar in the gulf - coast community by serving as a- chairman for the biloxi shrimp- festival, president of- central bay seafood, and as a - member of the biloxi business - men's club, just to name a few.- in harrison county, grace - boyles, news 25.-
