The alabama department of public health told us they recieved more than 300 thousand phone calls in the first few hours of the phone line being open with people trying to make appointments.

Tonight, they're asking for patience when the phone line reopens tomorrow morning..

Dr karen landers from the alabama department of public health told me today there is a limited number of vaccines so not everyone 75 years old and up will be able to get a vaccine at first..

But the vaccines are being offered on a first come first serve basis- by appointment only..

She told me the phone number is only to make appointments at health department locations- and private entities like doctors offices, hospitals and pharmacies will open up there appointments separately.

Dr. karen landers, alabama department of public health "we felt like by looking at where we were in terms of vaccinating our healthcare workers and also where we are in terms of doing what we can to keep people out of the hospital, that this was an important move toward our broad based vaccine strategy which again is limited based upon the supply of the vaccine that we have."

Now the phone line is open 7 days a week from 8 am untl 5pm..

Landers told me if you didn't get through today she suggests you try again in a few days..and asks for patience as they try to help everyone get in for their appointment.
