National Guard aid at nursing homes extended until end of February

National Guard members will continue to assist long-term care facilities in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties until at least the end of February.

600 indiana national guard members are being deployed to the united states capitol ahead of inauguration day.

News 18's joe paul is live at the indiana national guard armory in lafayette.

He joins us now to share how officials are preparing for potentially violent protests.

Joe?

Washington, d.c., is bracing for the possibility of more riots leading up to inauguration day.

That comes after the fbi warned of armed protests across the country this weekend.

About 20-thousand national guard troops are being deployed to the united states capitol.

That number includes about 620 members of the indiana national guard.

As we've previously reported, governor eric holcomb is also preparing for the potential of protests at the state capitol.

And i'm told indiana national guard members are also on standby to protect the state if needed.

We will be not just prepared but ready to do everything we need to be doing to maintain law and order and to ensure, of course, a peaceful expression of opinions.

A spokesperson for the indiana national guard provided a statement today to news 18.

He says hoosier guard members will quote "help protect the sanctity of the democratic process and help ensure the peaceful transition of authority."

It's unclear right now how many guard members from tippecanoe county, if any, will be deployed to washington, d.c.

I'm told the indiana national guard is 13- thousand members strong.

Which is plenty to provide support here and at the nation's capital.

Reporting live in lafayette, joe paul, news 18.

Thanks joe.
