Bengal polls: Crude bombs hurled in central Kolkata amid eighth phase of voting

Crude bombs were hurled in central Kolkata while elections were underway in the area.

Police said the bombs were hurled in front of Mahajati Sadan on Thursday morning.

Incident happened on Central Avenue in the heart of the city, triggering panic among people.

BJP's Jorasanko candidate Meena Devi Purohit alleged that bombs were hurled at her vehicle.

Purohit said the incident took place while she was touring different polling booths.

A senior Kolkata Police officer said a huge police contingent was deployed at the spot.

The police officer added that evidence was collected and an investigation started.

Seven seats in Kolkata, including Jorasanko, were voting in the final phase of assembly polls.

Polling began at 7 am and would continue till 6.30 pm, counting of votes on May 2.
