Can "Rich" Austria Do Without Russian Gas? EU Envoy's "Blood Money"

The European Commission has criticised the bloc’s representative in Austria for accusing the country of paying “blood money” to Russia for gas supplies.

This comes after EU representative Martin Selmayr said that Austria continues to get 55% of its gas from Russia.

Selmayr expressed astonishment at the lack of protests over Austria's gas payments helping fund Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

He criticised the slow pace at which Austria is weaning itself off Russian gas and saying it was paying "blood money" for the fuel.
