From the Archives, 1976: Boos, jeers and a boycott for Sir John Kerr

In February 1976, the Governor-General, Sir John Kerr, was booed and jeered by a crowd of demonstrators in Canberra as he arrived to open Parliament. Labor members boycotted Kerr’s opening speech in the Senate Chamber as they remembered the controversial events of November 1975, and Kerr’s role in the sacking of the Whitlam government.
