Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers Ltd (ASX:KPT) last week welcomed to the Island members of the South Australian Parliament’s Select Committee on Matters Relating to the Timber Industry in the Limestone Coast. The committee members visited Kangaroo Island to hear about issues facing KPT and other growers in accessing markets on the mainland. Facilities inspected The group inspected harvesting at Gosse West, water storage at Macgill’s, independently owned softwood at Westmore Park, the proposed export facility site at Smith Bay and the Kingscote wharf. Members of the committee also engaged with other KIPT team members and executives visiting from Morgan Sawmill, based in Jamestown. The committee then took evidence in Kingscote and canvassed a wide range of issues, including: Bushfire impacts and future management of bushfire risks; The development process for Smith Bay; Proposed interim transport solutions for timber out of Kingscote and Penneshaw; The cost of freight to the mainland for potential sales to mainland timber mills; Demand for timber and opportunities to work with parties such as Master Builders’ Association to supply structural timber to the SA home-building market.
