Subrata Roy, the businessman and founder of the Sahara group, was a strong supporter of various sports including cricket, hockey, badminton, chess, and shooting. He provided much-needed financial support at a time when sponsors were scarce. Roy's love for sports led to the sponsorship of the Indian Women's Cricket team, helping them prepare for the World Cup in 2005. Many sportspersons paid tribute to him, highlighting his contribution and support. Roy believed in creating a culture of sports to inspire and discipline the youth for nation building. The Sahara group also organized sports events for social causes, such as a Drought Benefit Cricket match in 2000.
