(MENAFN - The Peninsula) The ports of Qatar have witnessed an increase of 22% in containers handling in March compared to same period last year. Hamad Port, Ruwais Port and Doha Port handled 137,737 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers; 134,320 tonnes general cargo; 25,638 livestock heads; 48,924 tonnes building materials and 6,669 units of vehicles during last month, said Mwani Qatar in a tweet. A total of 250 ships docked at these ports in March. 'MwaniQatar received 137,737 containers in March 2021, an increase of 22% compared to the same period last year. In March 2020, Hamad Port, Ruwais Port and Doha Port handled 112,730 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers; 131,472 tonnes general cargo; 59,601 livestock heads; 41,554 tonnes building materials and 6,088 units of vehicles. A total of 225 ships docked at these ports in March 2020. Hamad Port handled 136,475 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers; 90,376 tonnes general cargo; 38,639 tonnes building materials and 6,628 units of vehicles during last month. A total of 138 ships docked at Hamad Port in March, QTerminals shared the figures.  Despite challenging situations created by the COVID-19 pandemic Hamad Port Qatar's gateway to world trade had wrapped up 2020 on a successful note. The Port had registered an increase in vessels' arrival and cargo handling in 2020 which indicates port's growing importance in regional trade. Hamad Port, in 2020, handled over 1.4 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) containers and received 1,600 vessels. According to figures released by QTerminals, terminal operating company providing services at Hamad Port, on its Twitter handle, the Port handled 1.4 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units containers; 304, 481 tonnes of bulk cargo; 1,196,559 tonnes of general cargo; 59,443 vehicles; and 264,164 heads of livestock in 2020. With every passing month and year, Hamad Port's handling of movement of vessels and cargo is increasing and the port is expanding its container terminal base. On December 22 last year, there was inauguration of initial operation of Hamad Port's Container Terminal 2, which is equipped with the latest environment-friendly technological equipment to meet the needs and requirements of shipping line operators and would increase the port's capacity by about three million containers per year.  MENAFN03042021000063011010ID1101854212
