(MENAFN) Over 1,000 illicit migrants were sent back to Libya, stated the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Sunday, Jun. 13. The UNHCR previously on Sunday posted on Twitter: "record number in returns of refugees and migrants to Libya today. Over 1,000 persons were returned in two operations in Zawiya and three others in Tripoli." The UNHCR noted: "UNHCR & IRC have provided medical aid, food and water to all survivors before being taken to detention by the authorities." The IRC is an abbreviation for the International Rescue Committee, a non-profit organization in the countrys capital Tripoli. The country has been inundated by a state of insecurity and disorder since the fall of its leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, turning it into a favored point of departure for illicit migrants who seek to traverse the Mediterranean Sea to European coasts.
