Juneteenth Becomes Federal Holiday, Commemorating the Freedom of Slaves

The White House recently announced the passage of the Juneteenth National Independence Act, which makes June 19 a federal holiday. The date commemorates the same day in 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas, were told that then-President Abraham Lincoln ordered the freedom of slaves.
