Bangladesh's main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led by Khaleda Zia, has started a 48-hour general strike and called for a boycott of the general election. They claim that the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cannot guarantee fairness. Campaigning has been marred by violence, with at least 15 people killed since October. The strike is being supported by left-wing protesters as well. The Election Commission has distributed ballot boxes and other supplies in preparation for the vote, which has more than 119 million registered voters.
