Mud Flows From Malibu Fire Burn Scar to Sea

A river of mud flowed down out of Zuma Canyon in Malibu, California, on Thursday, December 6, forcing officials to close the Pacific Coast Highway and cutting a small canyon across Zuma Beach.

Heavy rains have been pouring on Southern California for hours, turning the fresh burn scars above Malibu – the Woolsey Fire scorched more than 96,000 acres, torched 1,500 buildings, and killed three people between November 8 and 21 – into free flowing mud and debris.

In addition to mudflows, flash flooding was prompting road closures in the area.
