Iran halts some commitments under nuclear deal

Iran says it has officially halted some of the commitments it made under the 2015 nuclear deal with other world powers, following an order from its national security council.

Under the deal - Tehran was allowed to produce a limited amount of low-enriched uranium -- 300 kilograms. And produce what's called "heavy water," which is used in nuclear reactors - again with a limit of 130 tonnes.

They could also ship excess out of the country to store or sell.

An official at Iran's atomic energy body said Iran will not stick to these limits from now on.

In fact - they won't be enforcing limits at all.

Last week, Iran told China, France, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom of its decision to stop these commitments.

A year after the United States - an arch enemy of Iran's - withdrew from the accord - and re-imposed sanctions.

It comes as relations between Washington and Tehran continue to deteriorate, most recently with the movement of more American military forces and a carrier strike group into the region.

Iran's says its dropping the commitments, but until it starts producing more than that limit, it won't technically have violated the treaty.

And they have warned that unless world powers protect Iran's economy from U.S sanctions within 60 days they will start.

The European Union says they are still committed to the deal, but would not accept any ultimatums from Tehran.
