Tuesday Morning Sprint

It's 6:5 .... time for the morning sprint -- as our team gets you out the door with more local news this morning.

But we begin with an update from this weekend's massacres.

Grieving families are planning funerals in el paso and dayton.

At least 31 people were killed in all.

President trump is expected to visit el paso on wednesday.

He has condemned hate-fueled violence and stressed combatting mental illness... but hasn't called for stricter gun laws.

Governor evers is looking to republicans to pass a universal background check bill and a so-called red flag law... which makes it easier to take guns from people believed to be a threat.

The red flag law is something attorney- general josh kaul called for on inauguration day.

Now -- kaul tells news 3 now preventing gun violence should be bipartisan... and supporting a red flag law is a rare issue where he agrees with president trump.

Wisconsin groups are advocating for tighter restrictions in light of the massacres.

"wisconsin anti violence effort" and "moms demand action" are tw of those organizations.

The madison chapters are holding meetings this month.

From 5:30pm - 8pm neighbors throughout madison and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on front porch lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and first responders.

The janesville police department and rock county sherrif's office will also be hosting a national night out event tonight at 5.

The night out will be held in front of the janesville police department, and will include live music, a swat demonstration, and free food.

The event lasts until 8 the man arrested for a fatal drunk driving crash in rock county sunday night had been arrested for drunk driving three other times... police say even though daniel good has those three previous charges... it's likely they were long enough ago... that he could legally be back out on the road.

A wisconsin man is in jail this morning... being held on a 1- million dollar bond.

37-year-old keith comfort is charged with second-degree murder in the death of a missouri woman... who has been missing for 13 years.

Police say comfort walked into the lake geneva police department on sunday and asked to speak with an officer about his former wife, megan schultz, who had been missing since 2006.

In green lake county... a man is dead after a farming accident in the town of brooklyn.

Deputies say a tractor rolled over... pinning the man underneath.

His named hasn't been released yet -- he's only identified as a 61-year-old from green lake.

Today marks the 74th anniversary of the atomic bombing of hiroshima.

The u.s. attack killed 140- thousand people.

Hiroshima's mayor used the occasion to renew calls for eliminating atomic weapons worldwide.

When it comes to choosing a university... a new ranking is proving it doesn't get much better than going to uw- madison.

The u-w is ranked as the 25th best university in the world.

The university moved up from 27th in last year's "center for world university rankings."

Uw-madison placed 19th nationally... and is ranked 28th for quality of education... up from 65th last year.

The brewers have another starting pitcher on the injured list... this time it's zach davies with back spasms... he's the fourth starter on the i-l.

In pittsburgh last night... the crew took a step to get back on track against the pirates.

Yelich hit two home runs... one in the first, one in the ninth.

The final score, brewers 9, pirates 7.

The packers are excited to practice against someone other than themselves... today is the second day playing with the houston texans... including pewaukee native jj watt.

They'll play each other in the first preseason game thursday night at seven at lambeau field.
