Huawei unveils Harmony OS

A new operating system - announced on Friday (August 9) by the world's second-biggest smartphone maker.

It's a big deal - though not quite so big for smartphones... Huawei says its new Harmony OS will roll out in smartwatches and speakers, VR and other gagdets.

But for phones, the Chinese firm will stick to using Google's Android for now.

Even so, the move may ease Huawei's reliance on American technology At a time when the U.S. is imposing restrictions on its access.

Harmony, said Richard Yu, head of the firm's consumer business group, is "completely different" from Android and Apple's iOS.

And - in a message to get an estimated 800,000 developers in Huawei's ecosystem on board - said it could flexibly deploy across a range of devices.

Because of the U.S. curbs, becoming the world's biggest smartphone maker will be difficult this year, Yu admitted.

But he expects Huawei will keep its number 2 spot.
