Democratic presidential contenders urged Congress on Saturday to take action to curb gun violence in the wake of mass shootings last weekend in Texas and Ohio that left 31 dead.

Speaking at at a gun control forum in Iowa-which is where the first nominating contest in the Democratic race will be held next year- the candidates called for universal background checks and a ban on military-style assault weapons... They also called for 'red flag' laws that would allow police to temporarily confiscate guns from people deemed be a threat to themselves or others… (SOUNDBITE) REP.

TULSI GABBARD SAYING: "This is about passing commonsense gun safety legislation and bringing Democrats and Republicans to do so.." (SOUNDBITE) SOUTH BEND MAYOR PETE BUTTIGIEG SAYING: "If we want our neighborhoods not to be war zones, then we shouldn't fill them with the weapons to belong only in war zones.." (Aerial footage from el paso ) During the shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, the gunmen used semi-automatic weapons with high-volume magazines.

Candidates like Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris have said if they were elected president, they would use executive powers to take action to prevent more gun violence... and former Vice President and Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden brought up his work in the Senate in the 1990s passing an assault weapons ban that has since expired and many are calling for it to be reinstated... (upsound Trump) On Friday, Trump suggested that he could sway the nation's powerful gun lobby to drop its opposition to gun restrictions… (SOUNDBITE) PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "I have a great relationship with the NRA/I think we can get something really good done, I think we can have some really meaningful background checks..." But some Democrats are doubtful that Trump will take on the NRA... and are frustrated after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to call the Senate back early from summer recess to bring gun control legislation to the floor for a vote.
