Hong Kong protesters march to U.S. Consulate, call on Trump to "liberate" city

It started peacefully, strains of the 'Star Spangled Banner' pouring through the streets of Hong Kong.

Thousands of protesters gathered at the U.S. Consulate on Sunday to call on U.S. President Donald Trump to "liberate" the Chinese-ruled city.

They've beem calling on the U.S. to pass a bill that would require an annual justification of the special treatment afforded by Washington to Hong Kong- under the Policy Act of 1992.

But the demonstration took a dramatic turn and swiftly turned violent- with protesters barricading and smashing windows in the city's upmarket banking and shopping district.

Police once again fired tear gas in a bid to disperse the protesters, now commonplace after 14 weeks of demonstrations, which were triggered by a controversial extradition bill.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer said on Thursday that legislation addressing China's actions in Hong Kong will be among the top priorities pushed by U.S. Senate Democrats when Congress returns to work after a recess next week.

Last month Trump suggested China should "humanely" settle the protests, before a trade deal is reached with Washington.

He had previously called the protests "riots" that were a matter for China China has denounced the protests, accusing the United States and Britain of fomenting unrest.
