This is the moment flames billowed out of a London Travelodge hotel before the blaze was tackled by 100 firefighters.

The hotel was evacuated in the middle of the night leaving more than 160 guests and staff waiting outside for hours.

Dramatic video shows the fierce flames billowing out the ground floor before it spread through parts of the five-storey hotel at 2.45am this morning (4).

Station commander Nathan Hobson said at the scene: "When firefighters arrived they were faced with a rapidly developing fire.

"A single storey bin room on the ground floor was alight and the fire had already spread to an adjacent hotel of five floors.

"Firefighters carried out a systematic search of the hotel and fought the fire internally which helped stop the fire spreading further.

"Around 160 guests and staff evacuated the building.

"There were no reports of any injuries.

"A rest centre has been set up by the local authority.

Crews are working hard in challenging conditions to bring the fire under control.

"The brigade's control took seventeen 999 calls to the visible blaze.

There is a lot of travel disruption and we'd ask people to avoid the area if possible." Richard Fisher, 41, claims he set off the hotel fire alarm after being woken at around 2.45am by a "loud bang which sounded like a gunshot".

Richard then told a Travelodge employee there was a fire breaking out, before heading back upstairs to knock on as many doors as possible.

Waiting out in the cold for two hours as fire crews tackled the blaze, Richard said he and scores of guests lined up this morning to get inside McDonald's for warmth.

London Fire Brigade said this morning the fire was now under control but the cause of the blaze is not yet known.
