New research shows consuming too much of a certain amino acid has been linked to a variety of age-related chronic illnesses.

Sulfur amino acids are found in chicken, eggs, and other animal products, and are essential for one's health and metabolism.

Business Insider reports the study revealed Americans consume 2.5 times more than necessary for health.

Researchers from Penn State University College of Medicine found that higher intake of sulfur amino acids was linked to cardiovascular disease.

They suggest a plant-based diet can help regulate excess amounts of sulfur amino acids, leading to better cardiovascular and metabolic health.
