Civic Park will hold its grand opening on June 6

A soccer match will be played on the new field the day before.

Nearly five years after historic civic stadium was burned to the ground, civic park has a date for its grand opening.

June 6th is the day they plan to open their doors after they broke ground in 2018.

You're looking at the fire that destroyed the historic stadium in 2015... officials determined that the wooden structure was burned by four young boys -- some of whom were sentenced on arson charges.

Kezi 9 news reporter michael sevren got a first hand look at the construction and shows us what's in store.

With a bird's eye view thanks to sky 9... you can see the 30 million dollar phase one of civic park taking shape.

The soccer field is all done and derek johnson, the co executive director of civic alliance..

Tells me two weeks before it's grand opening, the lane united fc soccer team will take to the pitch.

He says the state of art synthetic turf has been designed with players in mind.

Sot: it allows the ball to move really smoothly and to minimize burns and that kind of stuff.

Nat sound: inside the field house, 8 basketball hoops have been set up with the hardwood being installed next month.

Project superintended jon baugus tells me 40 to 50 people, many with local contractors, are working to finish the park.

Civic park will be the new home for kidsports giving athletes of all ages a place to play.

Sot: it's a lot better then just building a warehouse; those are nice because somebody gets to go to work, but there are thousands of kids the community that will get to play here.

Stand up even though they're still finishing up construction, leaders at the eugene civic alliance tell me sports leagues of all kinds have already reached out to them to use both the field house and the soccer field.

Sot: frankly it's not surprising there is a need in the community and this just going to be a great facility.

While officials say they're still working to plan the grand opening, they're already planning for phase two.

Which includes bleaches, locke rooms and more.

Sot: it's just going to require some more fundraising we got the plans in place we just need to do it.

All so kinds can compete and play.

Of course... the fall and return of civic park is a story we've been tracking for years.

Civic alliance bought the 10-acre property in 2015 for 4.1 million dollars.

But in june of that year fire ripped trough the old stadium.

By october of 2017 they reached 50 percent of their fundraising goal.

Then one year later they broke ground.
