Harrison Bay Future Ready
Harrison Bay Future Ready

We take a look at the Future Ready program at Harrison Bay.

Students get hands on lessons in making marketable products... from fishing lures to homes for the homeless.

Harrison bay future ready center are getting hands on experience to learn some skills they can use in life.

Some have started a student run business for fishing lures.

Other kids are building special pallet houses for non profit groups.

It's another example of what's right with our schools.

Natural sound: but you can go into detail to tell you what your rooms and stuff and number on.

Lynda: everybody when they walk in this door they're working on whatever the future ready path is.

Where in the other schools they might mix with other kids.

Natural sound: so that's ah... that has it turn left.

Riley: this is different because it allows us to focus more heavily on it.

Here we get to go to class and participate in clubs like robotics.

Where we get to focus on our skills that we want to further and get better at.

Natural sound: karen: it is a total immersion.

So we are a small school community and we know all our kids even if they are not in our classes.

It just really keeps the kids focus.

Because they know everybody in their class is focused on the same things.

Natural sound: you can leave this class and begin making money.

Zane: just started as you know, we had a, we all had a interest in fishing.

Just kinda why not make our own bates.

And we kinda got into it and it was a lot easier than we thought and we were like why don't we say all these.

Bryan: what we like doing is like you said earlier, get them ready for the real world.

With our student run businesses that we have done that with the fishing lures.

Natural sound: jacob: those countries like puerto rico like with their flooding and everything they have like all of their houses are gone.

They can't really do anything about it right now.

So by sending these over there it gives them some quick shelter and good shelter.

Bryan: well the pallet program is our last semester project that we are doing.

And it's for designing disaster relief.

Really to be honest with you it's more i helping the kids problem solve and learn to work together i think.

Because they are running into problems every time they add one piece to it there is a problem.

And it's going to be always up to them to solve that problem.

We are just there to facilitate and make sure that the problem is going to be resolved.

Lynda: we are here to look out for them and make sure that they stay out of trouble, learn what they need to learn and have a good future.

Like when we want to teach them skills that employers come to us and say hey we can't find kids that will put their cell phones down.

We can't find kids that can self start.

And those are things that we can work on so that they can go out and become good employees.
