Chattanooga's City Council decided today to cancel meetings for the coming weeks.
Council members decided to cancel their meetings for the rest of the month due to coronavirus.
This afternoon at their strategic planning meeting, they voted unanimously to suspend meetings temporarily.
In the meantime, they will communicate through email and send it all to the city's attorney's office.
Council members say this was the right action to take after mayor andy berke declared a state of emergency.
"we have to stress the fact that social distancing is the best way to reduce this virus and we have to lead in saying that.
I know it may sound harsh to do but we have to make that clear that this is the best way."
The city charter usually requires the council to meet at least twice a month, which was done on march 3rd and march 10th.
