Police in the southern French city of Nice have found a new way to remind citizens of confinement measures in France against the coronavirus outbreak: a talking drone.

"Please respect a safe distance of at least one metre between people," the drone announced as it took off on Thursday (March 19) in Nice's city centre, where a handful of people were still out in the streets.

France instated the lockdown on Tuesday (March 17), obliging people to stay at home except for specific reasons such as buying basic necessities and seeking medical care.

Despite the gradual coming of spring weather, shops and cafes in Nice, a usual tourist spot, remained shuttered.

Local leaders have closed beaches from the public, and Nice's mayor Christian Estrosi announced on Friday (March 20) that the iconic Promenade des Anglais will also be closed.
