Amory Regional Museum is now a Pandemic Response Center

Monroe county... the city of amory has now opened a pandemic response center at amory's regional museum.

Wtva's chelsea brown is live with a look at what the city is doing to help.

Amory regional museum was actually the city's hospital from 1916 to 1960 before it was the museum.

As you can see..city workers and volunteers???

Are using the museum as a pandemic response center .

Here volunteers are making masks, collecting cleaning supplies, and even calling to check on residents.

Wayne knox is the coordinator for the pandemic response center at the amory regional museum.

He was the director at the museum before the coronavirus outbreak.

He is working with other staff members from the museum as well as volunteers.

Years ago knox worked on pandemic threat assessment with the military.

"seeing what was coming our way i thought if we didn't get out ahead of it and start putting some plans in place as the whole community could respond together, it would be real easy for us to get swamped."

The pandemic response center is working with first responders, the hospital, city government, churches, and small businesses.

The pandemic response center is also working with the food pantry and meals on wheels.

"them helping people stay fed during this crisis is essential" knox started planning about two and a half months ago.

A few weeks ago he closed the museum and started full operations on the pandemic response center.

I asked how long he plans to keep it open "we're here for the duration, and even if it's just me and a handful of other volunteers up here we are going to keep operating.

Knox said he wants and is willing to help other communities as well.
