Suspect dead after shooting with police

Are we are learning more about what led to a police involved shooting in west terre haute this morning.

According to indiana state police... a suspect shot at police.

We now know that suspect is dead.

News 10 has been bringing you updates on this situation since it started this morning.

News 10's richard solomon was there with live reports as police cleared the scene.

He has new details for you tonight on this developing story.

Richar} police responded to this area around 8:30 this morning.

I did speak with indiana state police sergeant matt ames.

He says the most important thing is that everyone is okay.

Pk} police say the suspect in this case is dead after a gun fight with officers.

Ames says vigo county deputies came here to this field.

He says they saw this vehicle with no one in it and the back window busted out.

Ames says the officers assumed the suspect was still in the area... so they tried to make contact using a p-a system.

That's when ames says the suspect starting shooting at officers.

They called for backup and multiple agencies responded.

They set up a perimiter... and officers eventually found the gunman in a wooded area.

Ames says that's when officers told the suspect to put his gun down... instead -- the person fired more shots directly at officers.

Those officers returned fire.

Later... the terre haute special response team was able to move in closer to the suspect.

They found that person dead.

Ames says one officer did suffer an ankle injury... but no officers were shot.

"every law enforcement officers that were at the scene communicated very well, worked well with each other and it's just good to see that we're making sure that we're taking care of the public's safety and our safety."

Police have not yet released the identity of the shooter.

An autopsy will be scheduled at terre haute regional hospital.
