News 18's marvin bills shares how defouw chevrolet is connecting patients with their loved ones.

It's a gesture that'll go a long way.

"i hope it'll be able to give them peace and connection with their loved ones."

General manager of defouw chevrolet and bmw lafayette grant gernhardt wanted to make a difference during this time.

So he's extending a helping hand to those battling covid-19.

With the help of his family he has donated ten tablets to franciscan health lafayette east.

"they are able to use those to help connect patients with family members during these challenging times."

It was a coincidence because franciscan health workers were in the process of figuring out new avenues for covid-19 patients to connect with their loved ones.

"a lot of family members aren't able to come to the hospital.

Which is terrible.

Especially if a patient has a diagnosis that is a grave diagnosis and they may not make it.

It's the only way they can connect with a family member."

Administrative director of spiritual care services michael winstead says this will also help patients who are struggling with illnesses other than covid-19.

"just in our general care if we were interacting with patients and we sense loneliness or isolation or just the need to connect with family."

Winstead says patients and family members are accustomed to actually being with their loved ones during difficult times.

Having these tablets will give patients a sense of presence.

"actually being able to be with their loved ones in a time of sickness or the time of death.

Now because of these restrictions they are not able to do that."

"in times like this we realize what's most important and it's family and friends and taking care of our community."
