Retail stores begin reopening in Chico

Governor Newsom lifted some restrictions in Phase Two of his reopening plan, allowing some retailers to continue operating.

Mayor ann schwab tells me they're working to educate all open businesses on how to protect their employees and customers.

Dawn: we don't want to lose our little shops, it's important to support the locals.

Carol munson/owner of fifth street clothing: we closed voluntarily now it's time to open the economy back up because i enjoy being in business and i want to stay in business.

Governor newsom's plan allows some retail stores to open for curbside pick-up only but fifth street clothing owner carol munson is taking it a step further.

Carol munson: my door is open if people don't want to come in they can use the curbside.

Chico mayor ann schwab says the city hasn't signed off on businesses open but says they're not shutting anyone down either.

Mayor ann schwab: the city is reacting by helping them understand the regulations, giving them guidelines.

Guidelines like keeping six feet apart, sanitizing and creating a safe environment.

Dawn mcmahon/shopper: i think as long as everyone takes the proper precautions it'll be fine.

Carol munson: some people may disagree but if they are not well they aren't going to be coming in.

Ann schwab: as we start to reopen commerce, we may likely see an increase in cases, we want to watch that, we want to continue having low numbers and continue having safe practices hopefully we can reopen on our own timeline.

Munson says they are also using u-v lights to kill bacteria and germs as well as following the safety guidelines.
