Putin uses disinfection tunnels to screen guests

Russian President Vladimir Putin is protected from the coronavirus by special disinfection tunnels that anyone visiting his residence outside Moscow or meeting him in the Kremlin must pass through, his spokesman said on Wednesday.

Soraya Ali reports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is making anyone visiting him pass through special disinfection tunnels to protect himself from the new coronavirus -- according to a spokesman.

One such tunnel has been installed at Putin's official residence outside of Moscow and two more in the Kremlin.

According to his spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, they were installed at the height of the pandemic in Russia which authorities say is now decreasing, particularly in Moscow where lockdown restrictions are being lifted.

The state-controlled RIA news agency published demonstration footage of the tunnel showing masked people passing through it and being sprayed with disinfectant from the ceiling and from the side.

They described the disinfectant as a fine mist that covered people's clothes and any exposed upper body flesh.

Putin has spent much of the pandemic running the world's largest country from his residence rather than the Kremlin, chairing video conference meetings from a room that his critics dubbed a bunker.

Spokesman Peskov said in April that anyone meeting Putin in person underwent testing for the coronavirus.

Though a month later, said he himself had been infected.

Today he said some restrictions in the Kremlin remained in place, though many had been removed.

He added however that precautions regarding Putin's health continued to be justified.

Who Will Replace Putin

Sputnik/Alexey Nikolskiy/Kremlin via REUTERS Business Insider On paper, Vladimir Putin would be replaced by Mikhail Mishustin as president of Russia if Putin dies or leaves office.
