Was driving on genesee street saturday, when she encountered a man who exhibited rage and hate toward her....because of the color of her skin.

The black woman managed to record the tirade on a cell phone.

And now, she and other members of the black community are using it to illustrate the need for change.

Here's newschannel 2's joleen ferris.

Jakeila phillips, of utica, was just driving down genesee street saturday when she came face to face with abject racism .

None .

None 1:19:12 'he was provoking the car before me.

He told them to roll their window down and they didn't and then he started throwing things at their car and that's when i pulled my camera out and i caught it when he threw his shake at them" then, the man who identified himself as barry wardell, starting yelling at her :14 "put me on facebook.

Black lives don't matter" :31 "what's your name?

My name is barry wardell.

What do you do for a living?

I cook.

I'm a chef" 1:20:08 "i was in so much disbelief, i just couldn't believe he was saying these things.

That's another reason i calmed down, i'm like, 'maybe he doesn't mean it, you know, i was giving him the benefit of the doubt, but then he just kept going and going" 1:48:42 "according to the young woman who was the target of the racial slurs and community activists who gathered with her today, what's perhaps the saddest or most offensive about this incident is that it's not isolated.

It just happened to be caught on tape" 1:09:33 "it happened to me but it was not a recordable moment, the person just drove off" what do the people gathered here at the corner of genesee street and hopper today want?

For starters, acknowledgement 1:02:14 "we're asking that people recognize it in the subtle and insidious ways that it occurs every day and often, unfortunately in many communities and right here in the city of utica" and what would jakeila phillips like to see come out of all this 1:20:56 'i would like to see that he has a change of heart and not be so racist or mean to people" phillips has talked to police and says she and others here today hope the man, barry wardell, is charged with a crime.
