This comes as many parts of the country brave natural disasters and the aftermath it brings.

New this morning....news 18's marvin bills joins us live from american red cross in lafayette.

Marvin, how can people help?

Good morning marlee, and to you all at home.

If you are a quick learner american red cross is looking for you.

I spoke with the executive director for american red cross, indiana region, brice johnson.

He says now is the time for everyone to unify in order to help others.

Executive director for american red cross, indiana region, brice johnson says the organization is looking for volunteers who are 18 years and up with a valid drivers license.

"our work just getting started."

Right now there are fifty hoosiers actively a part of the american red cross who are across the country helping pick up the pieces of a disaster.

"indiana traditionally has been in a good position.

Because we have usually long periods of what we call "blue sky conditions" so we are able to build our volunteer base, resources and things like that."

A volunteer base that can help in places such as oregon where blue skies have lately been a thing of the past because of wildfires and places such as texas and louisiana where buildings and homes were destroyed after hurricane laura.

"for me oregon is actually my home state.

So this is a very personal ask when i am talking to potential volunteers.

When i am seeing family and friends post photos of zero visibility in their neighborhood because of smoke and devastation in their area it becomes very personal."

If you are interested in signing up to be a volunteer there is a link to the application.

Johnson also mentioned that people who may not have a free schedule can still help too.

Of course all of the information you need is linked to this story on our website at wlfi dot com.
