Residents in Khon Kaen, northeast Thailand, prepare sandbags for floods as Typhoon Noul reaches the country today (September 18).

The storm smashed into the coast of central Vietnam, but according to local media, strong winds and heavy rain are already being felt in Thailand.

In Khon Kaen and Ubon Ratchathani, roads are flooded after torrential downpours lashed the area.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting in Vietnam warned of winds of up to 160 kilometres per hour.

The Thailand National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting also warned of floods and damage from the typhoon, as it is expected to continue to move west into Laos and northern Thailand, where severe rain and flooding have been predicted over the weekend.
