Runs : ) here in vardaman, the sweet potato capital of the world.

I went to one sweet potato farm to see if the coronavirus had impacted its work this year.

Tj morgan- farmer "the beginning of the year was a little slow but it has picked up."

Tj morgan is a farmer at morgan farms. he says at the begining of the year there was a lot of rain, impacting the growth of the sweet potatoes.

He says as the year went on, the crop began to rebound.

Morgan farms runs 5 diggers at a time and can pick about 15 acres of sweet potatoes a day.

"if the potatoes are better its slower if they aren't as good we can pick the speed up a little bit."

After the sweet potatoes leave their farm, they are sent to be washed, packaged, and distributed.

"they ship them out all over i couldn't even name all of the places."

Morgan says the potatoes get shipped all over the country, to canada, and even some over seas.

The pickers for morgan farms are migrant workers from mexico.

I asked morgan if using migrant workers had been any more difficult this year because of the coronavirus.

"they had to go through tests to come over here."

Morgan says not much has changed.

The workers already wore masks because of the dust and dirt while picking the potatoes.

Morgan says the field they are picking now has had good production and hopes the rest of their fields are good as well.

"you never know until you get to the field because you can't see them under the ground."

Tag.

Morgan says the workers only stay a couple of days after all the work is done before returning to mexico.
