The highly-anticipated reopening of highway 231 in morgan county is set to happen today!

The project is nearly 2 months ahead of schedule.

Back in february the road had to shut down because record breaking rain nearly washed it out!

Waay 31's ashley carter joins us live from morgan county now with what you need to know ahead of the road's reopening.

Governor kay ivey - along with department of transportation representative and local officials will be in morgan county for a ribbon-cutting today.

And people we talked to said they're excited the day is finally here after nearly 8 months of taking detours.

In its latest update - the department of transportation said it expects the 2 bridges to open to traffic after the ceremony today.

They were built to prevent the road from cracking again during heavy rain.

But - a spokesman said it will take time to open the road - and it may have to be done in stages.

Because of that - they're asking people to be patient - and remember that the area is still an active work zone, so there will be some lane closures in the coming weeks.

But people who take the road regularly said they're just glad it's reopening!

"people are going to feel less stressed.

It used to take 30 minutes, now it's like an hour...hour and a half so it'll be great in that area," the state says the 14 million dollar project is 2 months ahead of schedule drivers told us even though they know everyone is excited the road's re- opening they hope everyone remembers to still drive safely live in morgan
