Government school teachers in eastern India's Jharkhand turned villages into schools after the COVID-19 induced lockdown closed schools.

This method of imparting education has been adopted by Dumka's Dumarthar village.

Videos from the village show Principal Sapan Kumar with a handheld speaker teaching school children seated outside their homes.

Blackboards have been created on the walls of houses to teach while observing social distance.

According to Kumar, 295 students from his upgraded middle school at the village are being taught in this manner due to the pandemic.

The school was forced to take this step as more than 80 per cent of its tribal students come from areas which have little to no mobile connectivity.

District administration has focused on 450 shadow zones with low mobile connectivity to teach over 12,000 children.

With social distancing, masks, loudspeakers, blackboards, and a few volunteers, teachers in various Dumka villages have ensured that their students’ studies do not suffer.

The footage was captured on September 30.
