Proposal would make owning farm animals illegal in Kirkland residential areas

The Kirkland Town Board met Wednesday to discuss a proposal that would prevent people from keeping farm animals or fowl, like chickens and turkeys, in residential neighborhoods.

Kirkland is proposing a new local law, restricting farm animals in residential neighborhoods.

News channel 2's caitlin irla tells us about the law and why it was proposed.

None standup -- "the town supervisor says this local law is just in the very beginning stages, nothing is set in stone yet, but he says he feels there does need to be a law out in place in the town."

"what we did is we put a fairly generic law together, got input from the residents, now we'll take it back and tweak it to our own town."

Kirkland town supervisor, robert meelan, says this local law against keeping farm animals in residential areas was proposed because there have been some issues in the town with certain farm animals.

"we've had one issue that's been 4 or 5 years now, person had chickens, its rural residential area, but its really a residential area, we've had issues with chickens, roosters keeping people awake, issues with smell, the law as it is right now states - the town board finds that the keeping of farm animals or fowl in residential neighborhoods can cause nuisances to nearby residential properties and create conditions which are unsanitary and unsafe, and is therefore incompatible with residential life.
