An Oneida man has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly dragging a dog with his vehicle causing fatal injuries.

After an australian shepherd was found severely injured and had to be euthanized.

News channel 2's caitlin irla joins us live here in the studio to tell us what happened.

Jason, milton lighthall is accused of wrapping a cord around a dog's neck and dragging her with his car.

The oneida county sheriff's office says it happened on hill road, in verona.

It all began in early october, after a witness called 9-1-1 to report a man with a dog that had a cord wrapped around it's neck.

The witness also noticed blood on the roadway from the dog, which at this point, ran away.

On october 9th, a man went to a local animal hospital with a badly injured dog matching the description of the one deputies were searching for.

The man was determined to be the dog's owner, who the sheriff says is an acquaintance of lighthall.

Six-year-old lilly had to be put down due to her severe injuries.

"these are horrible cases.

We filed a charge and hopefully there's a quick conviction and the appropriate consequences are handed out."

"the key part here was this citizen who made the call and thank god for them and they did what they did because that opened the door for us to solve this case eventually."

Milton lighthall is due in verona town court at a later date.

And i just want to be clear, lighthall was not released as a result of bail reform.

The charge, which is aggravated cruelty to animals, is under the ag and markets law.

Sheriff maciol says the courts don't set bail for that.

If lighthall is convicted, he will be put on the oneida county animal abuse registry.
