That man is identified as 21?

After shooting a police officer ?

"* weiland ws allegedly randomly shooting a high powered rifle inside shady oaks apartment.

Two more people were hurt.

Imagine being woken up to the sound of gun shots.

Well that's exactly what happened to the women who lives in the house behind me.

She tells me that she is lucky to be alive.

Nats resident 1: there were six shots and i could hear that it hit the front of the house.

Rona gstalder house was in the line of fire during the early morning shooting.

When she heard what sound like fireworks she immediately called the albert lea police department to report the noise ?

"* shortly before 2:30 in the morning.

When police arrived to the area of the 800 block of 4th avenue south ?

"* they were immediatly ambushed... one office was shot in the chest... while two bullets hit his squad car.

Resident 1"the shooting went in waves.

Resident 2 : guns shots every 45 minutes nate harris lives next door to gstalder and heard a similar commotion.

Resident 2: "i woke up a quarter after two to sirens just down the road and then gun shot after gun shot after gun shot.."

As the events unfolded it became a nightmare for albert lea residents.

Police evacuated and cut the power to the apartment weiland was shooting from.

The rapid and constant gun fire lead police to barricade streets and put out a shelter in place order for the neighborhood' s residents.

Resident 2: "the adrenaline rush of all of this my hands were shaking a little bit i was kind of pacing i didn't know what was gonna happen next.

Harris's bedroom faced the building where the shooter was hiding out... and he saw the second victim get hit.

Resident 2" i believe it was just before 6 am more shots rang out and a gentlemen was shot.

I witness that happen.

After a 9 hour stand off the albert police with the help of close to a dozen other law enforcement agencies were able to apprehend the shooter... 21 year old devin matthew weiland.

A total of three people had been we now know the suspect has been transported to mayo clinic and went into surgery around 5 o clock tonight.

During the active shooter incident ?

"* a minnesota state patrol trooper discharged their firearm.

Wieland is in surgery for shrapnel injuries but it's unclear if he was shot or not.

All apartment complex residents but the 3rd floor have returned back to their homes.

The remaining residents are being provided hotel accomodations .

The albert lea police officer who was shot in his vest was treated and released at mayo clinic health system.

"* were taken by air ambulance to st marys for gunshot injuries but are expected to be ok.

The identities of the officer and the two other injured people are not yet released.

This afternoon albert lea residents took to the streets to show their support for law enforcement.

About a dozen residents stood outside the freeborn county government center with signs in hand.

Organizer robert hoffman says the albert lea community doesn't stand for violence.

He says today's police involved "the law enforcement officers that have agreed to put their lives in jeopardy for our safety but they are also our best friends.
