Local elementary school students received a shopping spree Wednesday with the Tupelo Police Department.

The tupelo police department brought christmas a little early for some very lucky elementary students.

This morning the police department kicked off its annual 'shop with a cop' event.

Students from carver and lawhon elementary schools paired up with a police officer and headed to walmart on west main street for a shopping spree.

Each child received 300 dollars to spend on whatever they wanted.

Most headed straight for the toy aisle to pick up some of their favorite dolls, wrestling characters and action figures.

Police chief bart aguirre said this event is great for building trust with the community and giving kids the opportunity of a lifetime.

"just seeing the excitement that these kids get to experience.

Going to the schools with a police escort, getting to see the police with all the lights and sirens is really exciting."
