Herkimer College, MVCC among SUNY community colleges to cancel high-risk winter sports

Nearly all of the SUNY community colleges in the National Junior College Athletic Association have decided to cancel high-risk winter sports this season, including Herkimer College and MVCC.

Their winter sports season canceled among those deemed to be high- risk.

The hawks and generals are among 27 of 30 suny community colleges - in the n-j-c-a-a to have collectively announced this decision today.

This will affect basketball - cheerleading and volleyball for our local schools - while wrestling has also been canceled among those that offer it around the state.

These schools have deemed that low to moderate risk indoor sports including bowling - and swimming and diving - may still compete in a virtual setting while following covid-19 protocols.

This decision was made solely among suny community colleges - the n-j-c- a-a itself has not canceled the winter sports season nationwide.

While its another blow to the sports landscape locally in this difficult year - schools are coming up with ways to still provide their student- athletes with a meaningful athletic experience.

Donald dutcher: what we want to do here at herkimer is obviously as i mentioned we are offering to still be able to practice but maybe trt it like a prep year.

Come here, most of your classes are still going to be remote but the academic support center is still going to be open, the library is going to be open, our buildings are going to be open and you can have team study halls, you can still practice with the team, we can even film the team practices because a lot of our student athletes transfer on so we can really hone in on your film.

Not so much on game but even individual film.

So we are working on coming up with different things to entice those student athletes to come back in the spring and be here in even though they are going to be in a practice only mode n-j-c-a-a student- athletes whose seasons are cancelled will not be losing a year of athletic eligibility so that's a plus.

No decisions have been made yet regarding the spring sports season.

Those decisions are expected to be made sometime next month.
