The central government told the Supreme Court that the states can consider granting minority status to any religious or linguistic community, including Hindus if the community is not in a majority within their jurisdiction.
The plea was filed to enable the minorities to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice according to the Minority rights provided for in the Constitution.
