The United States and China hold formal high-level talks in Beijing aimed at limiting the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. The synthetic opioid, many times more powerful than heroin, has caused an epidemic of addiction in the United States, with 100,000 overdose deaths a year, making it the leading cause of death of people aged 18 to 49, US officials have said.

The talks mark the resumption of counternarcotics cooperation that was suspended for more than a year even as America struggles with what has been called its worst drug crisis in history.
