From the Archives, 1981: Great Barrier Reef gains world heritage status

Forty years ago, three Australian sites, the Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu National Park, and the Willandra Lakes in NSW, were recognised as part of the world’s natural and cultural heritage, and declared worthy of international protection.
